For a really successful website or blog, you need to spend some time working on ways to get traffic to it.  The more web visitors to your website the better whether you are blogging for fun, publishing information, or selling a product.  There are a lot of different ways to get traffic to your website.  The most common ways of getting web traffic are backlinks, pay per click ads, and search engines.  Let's go over each of these methods for improving web traffic to your website or blog.

Search Engine Traffic

Getting listed in the search engines is one of the best ways to generate traffic to your site. To get listed in the search engines, they must first know that your site exists. Each search engine works a little bit differently but in general, they must learn that your site exists so they can "crawl" or "spider" your site.  Crawling (or spidering) is when a search engine finds your site, it will follow the internal links you have on your pages to find the other pages on your site.  So, be sure to have internal links to all of the pages you want to get indexed in the search engines.

Search engines also like for your site to have a sitemap. A sitemap is basically just a list of internal links on your site so it can easily find all of the pages on your website that you want to be listed in the search engines. They will follow all of the links on your site and parse the data on every linked page so they can add them to their database.

Traffic from Pay Per Click

If you are willing to pay to get traffic to your site, there are many options.  The bottom line to pay per click is that a small ad is placed on other sites with existing traffic (this can be done on most search engines).  Then, when someone sees the ad about your site, if they click on the ad, they come directly to your site (and you are charged for the click).  The price of the click can range anywhere from a penny to several dollars depending on the keywords used and the competition for those words.

Traffic from Backlinks

Another great way for getting traffic to your site is by having other websites link directly to yours. This also boosts how high your website shows up in search engine listings.  The more links you can get to your website from other websites, the better. In fact, each link you get back to your website is like a "vote" for your site as the search engines see it.  In addition, some votes are worth more and are weighed more heavily than other votes. The higher the site is listed in the search engines, the more
valuable the link to your site is.
